America Achieves is a national group of educators that is committed to helping children prepare for their futures, whether they continue on to college or enter the workforce. According to the organization's website, they accomplish this by helping states and communities leverage policy, practice and leadership in education. As a result, the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are among America Achieves' focus areas.
The group recently took a look at the quality of education in Tennessee, as well as the implementation of the CCSS in the state at a conference held at the Memphis Cook Convention Center, the Memphis Commercial Appeal reported.
Overall, about 100 teachers and principals converged on Memphis to discuss education reforms in Tennessee. Those who were in attendance, such as Memphis-based math teacher Steven McKinney, take their roles as educators very seriously.
"As an African-American male who grew up in inner-city Memphis, it is my responsibility to help improve the lives of the people in my community," McKinney, who teaches at Booker T. Washington High School, told the news source. "It has become a personal responsibility to be the voice for inner-city students who lack the social or economic resources or support to get their needs met."
