A lot goes into helping students perform well on standardized tests, such as the Iowa Assessments. According to officials from East High School, which is part of Iowa's Des Moines Public Schools, attendance plays a big role in students' performance.
Steve Johns, East High School's principal, recently spoke to the Des Moines Register about how important it is for students to show up for class. Johns and the institution's educators have been spreading this message for the past two years, and it appears to have paid off. Not only has attendance increased from 88 percent to 92.2 percent in Johns' tenure, but test scores are up as well.
Johns told the news source that since the High School has been stressing the importance of attending class, students in grades 10 and 11 have improved their reading scores on the Iowa Assessments by more than 19 percent. In addition, students also performed well in the areas of math and science.
The Iowa Assessments, which replaced the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS), also gauge students' performance in the areas of social studies, vocabulary, word analysis and computation, according to Riverside Publishing's website.
