Parents step into their children's shoes at CCSS training event

Because of parents' busy schedules, officials from Georgia's Norton Park Elementary School were not sure how receptive they would be to attending special classes designed to educate them about the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). According to The Marietta Daily Journal, it was not worth worrying, as the recent training event was a success.

"We weren't sure what to expect because the weather wasn't good and because parents are so busy raising their children and working and trying to fit everything in, including the activities," Jennifer Gates, Norton Park's academic coach, told the news source. "We had hoped for a great crowd, and it exceeded our expectations on every level."

During the event, which was held at Norton Park, around 40 parents and their children attended one-hour classes that provided hands-on activities and ways to better understand the CCSS. According to Gates, it was important for teachers to instruct parents as if they were their children. This allowed the mothers and fathers in attendance to see how their kids are taught about the Common Core.

The Georgia Department of Education states that the effective implementation of the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards, which incorporate the CCSS, will require support on multiple fronts. For this reason, the more parents know about the Standards, the better able they will be to help their children succeed in school.
