North Carolina library offers CCSS-aligned grab bags

In addition to classrooms, many academic institutions also have a library on school grounds. As 45 states and the District of Columbia have adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), it only makes sense for librarians who work in and outside of academia to be familiar with the CCSS.

Following the introduction of the CCSS in 2010, the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) came out in support of the Standards. According to the AASL's position statement on the CCSS, Association officials recommend school librarians study the Common Core to better support student success.

One group of librarians that understands the importance of the CCSS works at the Orange County Main Library in North Carolina. According to The Herald-Sun, visitors to the library can now borrow a grab bag of CCSS-aligned books to help them better understand the Standards.

"When the new school year began, we spoke to several teachers and media specialists from Orange County Schools and determined that there was a need for these bags," Mary Shaver, the library's youth services librarian, told the news source. "The Youth Services staff examined the Common Core State Standards, chose appropriate materials and worked at the end of 2012 to create the new bags."
