More funding needed for the successful implementation of the CCSS in NYC

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) have the potential to improve the state of education in New York City (NYC). However, before Big Apple teachers can provide their students with the type of instruction that will prepare them for college and the workforce, the CCSS must be fully implemented – a crucial step that could be in jeopardy without proper funding, Gotham Schools reported.

According to Shael Polakow-Suransky, the deputy chancellor for the NYC Department of Education, NYC school districts require additional funding before they can buy CCSS-aligned materials and train staff.

Polakow-Suransky recently met with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's Education Reform Commission to talk about the importance of more funding. With additional financial resources, school districts would be able to buy books, software and other classroom materials that are aligned with the CCSS. In addition, institutions could put money toward hiring Common Core coaches who would assist teachers during the implementation process.

Michael Mulgrew, president of the United Federation of Teachers, is also concerned that NYC students are not prepared for the changes that lie ahead.

"It is my grave concern that there will be thousands, millions of students across this state who will be tested on a curriculum that was never supplied to their teachers," said Mulgrew, as quoted by The Wall Street Journal.
