Missouri school district to offer free, full-day kindergarten

This past October, the Missouri Department of Elementary & Secondary Education's Office of College and Career Readiness issued an administrative memo to the state's school districts regarding the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The purpose of this letter was to remind superintendents and principals that they should be working toward curricular changes within the next two years.

One school system that does not appear to be in need of a reminder is Missouri's Mehlville School District. That is because the District's board of education recently approved a decision to offer free full-day kindergarten beginning in the 2013-2014 academic year, Mehlville-Oakville's Patch website reported. From District Superintendent Eric Knost's perspective, the CCSS is just one reason why area children could benefit from full-day kindergarten.

"These kids are going to be required to meet standards that kids meet now in third or fourth grade," Knost told the news source.

The District has the ability to do away with the kindergarten program's current tuition thanks to more state funding for weighted full-day attendance. Despite the upcoming change, parents will still have an opportunity to enroll their children in half-day kindergarten.
