With the new academic year comes a fresh round of standardized testing for students taking classes within Georgia's Newton County School System. Beginning on September 10, all sixth-graders will be required to take the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS), the Newton Citizen reported.
This testing period will run for several days, and see to it that Newton County sixth-graders spend approximately five hours a day working on the ITBS. While students may not find standardized testing to be the most exciting activity, Carl Skinner, the School System's director of testing, told the news source their results will provide insight into their academic strengths and weaknesses.
"With this information, the school can plan appropriate learning experiences," Skinner said.
According to The Riverside Publishing Company's website, the ITBS assesses students' abilities in the areas of math, science and social studies, as well as their English language skills through questions on word analysis, vocabulary and reading comprehension.
To ensure students do well on the ITBS, Skinner is advising parents to make sure their children get plenty of sleep during the testing period and eat a nutritious breakfast each morning.
