For students across the country, kindergarten is becoming more challenging thanks to the adoption of the Common Core State Standards(CCSS). However, this push to provide young learners with a more rigorous education has a purpose, as children will be expected to know much more before they progress to the first grade.
According to the CCSS’ website, kindergartners will be expected to know the difference between a storybook and a poem. In addition, they will learn how to use question words like "what," "when" and "why" regularly.
In Michigan’s St. Joseph Public Schools district, Lincoln Elementary will offer full-day kindergarten classes, even though school officials realize they may lose a few students, the Herald Palladium reported. However, a longer day is essential in preparing children for the CCSS.
"There's definitely a need for more time [in the classroom] due to the academic push," Mike Wagner, Lincoln’s principal, told the news source. "I do believe our teachers are excited about this. They're going to have more time to work with these kids. They're going to be able to provide interventions for the kids who need it because they have them longer."
