The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are coming, but a lot of parents still do not know what they are, or how much of an impact they will have on their kids' education. Based on existing data, many adults are very much in the dark when it comes to the CCSS.
A recent report from Achieve, a nonprofit dedicated to raising state standards, found that as of May 2012, 60 percent of adults knew "nothing" about the CCSS, while 19 percent knew very little. Only 7 percent of people surveyed said they knew "a lot."
For this reason, U.S. News & World Report recently created a cheat sheet for the parents of high school students. In addition to the fact that the Standards are consistent, and lay out what students should learn to achieve success in college and the workforce, the news source states that the Common Core will also go deeper. The instruction students receive will reach whole new depths, as their teachers help them acquire critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
At the high school level, students will be required to read more informational texts, such as nonfiction books, newspaper articles and journals. After all, these are the types of texts people will be working with over the course of their careers.
