When students return to Arizona’s Flippin Middle School (FMS) on August 20, they are in for a revamped schedule and all around academic experience, Principal Kelvin Hudson recently wrote in an article for the Baxter Bulletin.
Students can expect changes to the quality of their education due to Arizona’s adoption of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). According to the state’s Department of Education, the CCSS’ English and math Standards have already been implemented in kindergarten classes across the state. During the 2012-2013 academic year, the transition to the Common Core will begin for the remaining grades, with full implementation expected by the 2013-2014 school year.
In preparation for the CCSS, Hudson wrote that FMS teachers have spent the summer taking advantage of opportunities for professional development. With the Common Core comes the creation of a second math class for the Middle School’s sixth- and seventh-graders. This additional period of math instruction is designed to help these students work on specific math skills.
"As we continue moving toward inquiry-based/hands-on instruction with a strong emphasis in 21st-century technology skills, students will be working together to find solutions to real-world problems," Hudson wrote. "Our goal is to create an environment at FMS built on relationships in which students are actively engaged in meaningful learning."
