If K-12 students are to succeed in schools where they are taught according to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), they must be engaged in what they are learning about. One way for educators to accomplish this is through school events that combine essential instruction with fun. In honor of National Pi Day – March 14 – Connecticut's Goshen Center School recently held Family Math Night, the Torrington Register Citizen reported.
As there is a move to increase students' interest in mathematics, Congress designated March 14 National Pi Day, as this day's date, 3.14, features the first three digits of the mathematical constant. According to the annual celebration's website, there is a need to reinforce students' mathematical skills and help them compete in a 21st-century economy.
Goshen Center officials understand how important an early foundation in mathematics is, and that is why they offered an array of Common Core-aligned activities at Family Math Night. In addition to engaging in entertaining activities, those in attendance also had an opportunity to learn about the CCSS and what they will mean for mathematical instruction.
"The objective of this day is to celebrate mathematics and foster a love of mathematics within the students and parents in our school," Sara Baranauskas, a Goshen Center math specialist, told the news source.
