Some myths do not go away – especially those related to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Fortunately, officials from schools in states that have adopted the CCSS are taking steps to ensure parents know exactly what to expect from the Common Core.
This is the case in Fort Wayne, Ind., where hundreds of education officials and parents recently met to discuss the CCSS, WANE reported. During the event, those in attendance had a chance to voice their concerns regarding the Standards. For instance, some Common Core opponents said students will not receive a well-rounded education.
"They say they want the children to learn but this is not helping the learning of the children from what I understand as a spectator," said grandmother Juanita Norem, as quoted by the news source.
The truth is, the CCSS are designed to provide K-12 students with the education they need to thrive in college and their careers. According to the Standards' website, they were created with input from teachers, and are clear, consistent and more rigorous than past education standards.
If properly implemented, the CCSS will enhance student learning, which should put concerned individuals like Norem at ease.
