Georgia third-graders perform well on the ITBS

Georgia third-graders perform well on the ITBS

The thought of taking standardized tests may not excite too many students, but these assessments can actually be a big help to educators. For example, the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS), which include questions on vocabulary, mathematics and science, among other subjects, can provide results that help teachers make improvements to their curricula, according to Riverside Publishing's website.

Georgia's Cobb County School District is one school system that appears to be doing a good job teaching, at least among its third-graders. That is because the District's third-graders ranked in the 68th percentile based on their ITBS average composite scores, Northeast Cobb's Patch website reported. What this means is Cobb third-graders performed as good as or better than 68 percent of all other U.S. test takers in the third grade.

Based on their scores in individual subjects, Cobb third-graders did especially well in the areas of science and social studies, as they received scores in the 68th and 69th percentile, respectively. Students' language arts score was in the 60th percentile, while their math score was in the 63rd percentile. Fifth-graders and seventh-graders in the District also achieved composite scores in the 60s range.
