For Ohio school district, teacher training may mean less time in class

In Ohio, the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) must be fully implemented by the 2014-2015 academic year, according to the state’s Department of Education. As a result, school districts throughout Ohio are looking for ways to ensure their instructors are prepared to teach according to the CCSS.

For students who attend institutions within the Cuyahoga Falls City School District, more professional development for teachers may lead to less time in the classroom, according to the Falls News Press. The Cuyahoga Falls Board of Education is set to discuss a plan that would see students leave school an hour early every Wednesday so their instructors could receive the training they require.

Ultimately, this would provide educators with six days of professional development throughout the 2012-2013 academic year. There would be no change in the classes students are required to attend on Wednesdays, but each session would be shortened.

"For our students to have the maximum opportunity…our staff has to be well prepared for those changes that are going to take place," Todd M. Nichols, the District’s superintendent, told the news source.
