CCSS implementation leads to new schedule for Maryland school district

Common Core State Standards

When students return to Maryland's Frederick County Public Schools for the 2013-2014 academic year, the school day will be quite different, thanks to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). That is because the district plans to revamp its schedule for students who attend its middle schools, The Gazette reported.

In the next academic year, students will no longer attend 90-minute classes. Instead, they will go to seven 47-minute class periods throughout the day. With the new schedule will come a new academic focus, as pupils will devote more time to learning about science and social studies than they do now.

Frederick County's current schedule was created about a decade ago. As the CCSS are expected to be fully implemented by the 2013-2014 academic year, an updated schedule was long overdue. While the new schedule is designed to help students become better learners, some parents have expressed their displeasure with not being involved in its planning process.

Although they may not have been consulted in the creation of the new schedule, they are allowed to provide feedback on Frederick County's proposed 2013-2014 academic calendar, according to the school district's website, where visitors will find two versions of the calendar for review.
