Apple iPads make mathematical instruction fun at California school

Following the full implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) mathematical instruction will look quite different. For example, K-12 students in states that have adopted the CCSS will no longer have the chance to memorize a few concepts just so they can pass a test. According to the Standards' website, students will be required to understand mathematics. This means they will have to justify why a mathematical statement is true.

As many students are more familiar with their schools' pre-Common Core approach to mathematical instruction, these changes may take some getting used to. However, there are ways for teachers to make their lessons more engaging. For example, some math teachers at California's Judkins Middle School are using tablet computers to make instruction more exciting, the Times Press Recorder reported.

Judkins was able to establish an iPad lab thanks to a $20,000 Pacific Gas and Electric Co. grant. It has been about two weeks since students received the devices and enthusiasm over mathematics is already up. Many students are giving the technological math lessons rave reviews.

"I'm more comfortable with electronics than I am with a pencil," Jeremiah Rodriguez, a 12-year-old Judkins student, told the news source.
