The important role of school libraries

Tucked away in every K-12 school, you'll find the library, a room filled with shelves of books and rows of computers. Traditionally, libraries are places where students can research for class, work on homework and study for tests, but in the 21st century, books aren't the only tools available. While one might think the prevalence of technology may make the school library obsolete, this is far from the truth. In fact, libraries and the diligent professionals who maintain them are an important part of schools. Here's a look at how libraries and librarians serve students in K-12:

Harbor technology
In addition to storing books, school libraries often house computers, computer labs and other technology. Students can come to the library to do online research or complete computer-based homework assignments. Librarians have to know how to use this technology and help students who stop by. The Common Core State Standards address the issue of using technology, noting that students should be able to gather information and publish their own work online, and they can do that in the library.

According to a report by the American Association of School Librarians, librarians have a unique position when it comes to implementing Common Core goals in school. They have to supply technology expertise to the school and support other efforts to implement the Standards.

Support and educate students
Part of college and career readiness includes ensuring students have the skills they need to gather information on their own. School librarians help teach students those skills. They introduce them to best research practices and credible resources for academic information. Many librarians also teach students how to cite their sources for papers or projects, whether the information comes from an online journal or a book.

Provide a work environment
Students can meet at the library after school to work on group projects or study for an upcoming test. The environment is designed to support learning and focus, as it carries a variety of educational resources. What's more, libraries are a good central location in which students can work – they all know where the school library is located. In some cases, students receive tutoring at the library that helps them understand their homework and reach Common Core goals.

Gather helpful tools
Librarians have to think of the needs of teachers and students when filling the shelves, which may mean gathering Common Core resources for educators. They could also order new books that support curriculum aligned with the Standards.
