Improving your child’s creative writing skills

Kids are often imaginative, using free play time to invent entire worlds to exist in for a little while. But not all young people can take that innovation and put their ideas to paper. Creative writing is an important part of helping children learn and improve their vocabulary, so parents should encourage their kids to write at home. Here are some ways to help your kids develop their creative writing skills:

Create story maps
Children who are reluctant to write may be more comfortable starting to develop their stories via a map. Have your kids use coloring tools to draw what happens in chronological order. They can also sketch pictures of scenes and characters to flesh out their ideas. Then, the kids can label each part of their drawings and begin forming sentences and eventually complete an entire story.

Ask what your kids see
Young people begin storytelling in their heads as they go about their daily lives. Everything from getting the mail to brushing their teeth can become an exciting epic. Encourage your kids to express their internal monologues aloud. While you're in the car, for example, have your children make up stories about the people and places they see. This will help them develop storytelling skills, which they can later put to paper.

Provide prompts
Some kids just need a starting point to begin writing. You can help your kids by providing them with prompts. Anything will do! Offer a setting like a pond on a hill or share a character like a purple lizard who likes ice cream. Your children can then use their individual creativity to get into the prompt and make a fun tale. You can even make a book of these great stories to show how proud you are of their improved writing skills and save it for when they're older.
