The summer slump happens to many kids, as they don't put an effort into learning and may forget some subjects from the previous year's schooling. Parents can help their children stay on top of their education by encouraging them to go to summer camp. Here are some camp ideas your kids may enjoy and benefit from:
Engineering camp
Children who like making things might love engineering camp. Many universities and colleges offer fun summer programs for middle and high schoolers to try out engineering. Kids may make model airplanes that fly, create and control robots or even build and captain their own miniature boats. These awesome projects help kids learn about electronics, hydraulics, pneumatics and other important moving systems. The skills necessary to make machines at camp involve math, science and physics, so your kids will have a blast and learn new concepts that just might lead to an engineering career.
Naturalist camp
For kids who want to spend their time outside, naturalist camp is a great opportunity. At these science-themed gatherings, children can learn about local flora and fauna. They'll take part in workshops to understand how to identify different species with clues like footprints, feathers and fur. Your little campers may even spend time orienteering, learning how to use a compass and map to get around without becoming lost. Naturalist camp is a great chance to learn about biology and ecology.
Adventure camp
Maybe your children like to climb trees, jump high and run around a lot. For them, learning must be hands-on and involve participation. Adventure camp may be a great idea, as it is full of movement and challenges but still provides opportunities for learning. Depending on where you live, your children may have access to fishing, running, sailing, space or even snorkeling at camp. While kids have tons of fun doing these awesome activities, they also learn while doing so. Space camp, for example, involves plenty of STEM information and skills. To snorkel, your children will have to understand the mechanics behind clearing their face masks and breathing through an apparatus. Then, they'll spend time spotting cool fish and sea creatures in a biology lesson! Some adventure camps even feature several different options, like white-water rafting for a few days and then outdoor photography the next.
Culture or language camp
Many postsecondary schools provide summer camps where kids can learn about cultures that are different from their own. Your children can immerse themselves in new languages, interesting foods, awe-inspiring architecture and even far-out clothing! Ask your kids where they'd travel if they could go anywhere in the world, and then see if there is a language or culture camp geared toward educating children about that region. Your summer students may come home with a new appreciation for sushi and origami. Or perhaps they'll even learn how to say, "Hi, how are you?" and "My name is ____. I am from America." in a new language.
Spending a few days or several weeks during the summer on learning new things can help kids avoid the summer slump and start the new school year off on the right foot.
